WHEN PIRATES RULED THE WAVES

WHEN PIRATES RULED THE WAVES. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Marine Offences Bill  (15th August 1967) this CD tells the complete story of how the offshore stations began in the early 1960s and how they survived but finally  had to close down owing to the British Government which passed a bill outlawing all the offshore pirates. This CD explains how Radio Caroline began almost by accident and was the brainchild of Irish music promoter Ronan ORahilly. Anchored off  Felixtowe from the MV Mi Amigo, in March 1964 she began broadcasting on Easter Sunday of that year. It was like a bolt from the blue, In just one week  the station attracted 7 million listeners along with advertisers the organisation was making a profit. Within 6 months other stations appeared on the horizon. Included on this CD are recordings and jingles from radio's Invicta, King, 390, Essex, Caroline north and south, London, 355, Scotland, City, England, Britain Radio, BBC, and Radio Luxembourg!!!! Some pirates used the old ex army defence forts based in the Thames Estuary that the Ministry of Defence disclaimed all ownersip off. Most of the pirates were succesful in generating a huge audience and money from advertisers kept their stations on the air. Tony Benn MP has his say on the pirates and said they were a political menace. The two main highly profitable stations were Radio Caroline and Radio London the latter making about  £70,000 a month in its hey day!!! Most of the stations lasted about three years some a lot less. The Government had to act and they passed the Marine Offences Act due to start on 15th August 1967. Listen to some of the offshore pirates final few minutes of transmission saying goodbye for the very last time. Radio Caroline North and South continued until March 1968 when both ships were towed to Holland owing to unpaid debts. The offshore pirates were silenced. This was a unique period in British Broadcasting  and laid the groundwork in this country for future commercial stations and of course Radio 1.  Ahh  the memories just come flooding back.
