THE FINAL HOUR OF RADIO VERONICA AUG 1974

This is the final hour of Radio Veronica, from the MV  Nordeney anchored off the Dutch coast on 31st August 1974. Radio Veronica has the distinction of having broadcast from offshore for the longest period, more than 14 years!!  Veronica was set up by Independent  Radio, TV and Household Commercial Retailers in the Netherlands. They hoped to stimulate the sales of radio recievers in the country by broadcasting more popular programmes than the established state licenced stations in Hilversum. The station announced on its opening day that the station was called  V.R.O.N. " Vrije Radio omerouep Nederland Free Radio Station " but changed to Radio Veronica later. Broadcasting initially from the MV  Borkum Riff a 485 ton converted German light ship. The vessel was fitted out with horizontal antenna between fore and aft, the mast was fed by a 1 killowatt transmitter. The majority of programmes were recorded in  Hilversum. For a short time the station ran an English service under the call letters of CNBC (Commercial Nuetral Broadcasting Company) Later the  MV Borkum Riff was replaced by a former trawler the MV Nordeney. Finally the Dutch Government passed its  Anti Pirate Bill and was to come into affect on September 1st 1974, Radio Veronica which was so dearly loved by the people of Holland decided to close on 31st August 1974. This then is the final hour of Radio Veroinca, in his final speech DJ  Rob Out said " Part of the democracy in the Netherlands is dying with the closure of Radio Veronica and that is a tradgedy for the country ". Following the Dutch National Anthem, a Veronica jingle was played and the transmitters switched off. Some of the DJs and staff were openly wheeping at the time of closure. This is a recording of their final hour on that fatefull day, a truley remarkable offshore station that was adored by many thousands of people not only in the Netherlands but also parts of Europe and the UK. A brilliant CD charting a peice of radio history that will never be repeated.  Footnote; In 2007 the plan is to anchore this historic vessel in Zwolle in the Netherlands and make it into a floating discotheque, the Council there say its a fantastic idea to have such an important icon from Dutch pop history in Zwolle and could become a real tourist attraction. Radio Veronica is now a legal land based independent station broadcasting to the Netherlands and is on various frequencies and on the internet.
