Listen to an early transmission from Radio Mercur and Radio Veronica just two of the offshore radio stations that started the offshore radio boom. Radio Mercur started in 1958 and Veronica in 1960,followed by a Radio Nord broadcast. Find out why Radio Caroline started and how it obtained its name, Ronan O Rahilly owner of the offshore station explains. Find out why there were two Radio Carolines, one ship anchored of the Isle of Man, the other off Clacton in Essex. Eventually the last of the pirates Radio Caroline ceased broadcasting in March 1968 due to huge debts and both ships Caroline North and Caroline South were towed to Holland. With the pirates gone Radio Luxembourg began its new period of continous pop music and Radio 1 with its restricted air time of playing records also began new ventures.
