FINAL HOUR OF RADIO 355

Formerly Britain Radio this is the final hour of Radio 355 broadcasting from the MV Laissez Faire anchored three and a half miles off the coast of Walton on the Naze in Essex. With the Marine Offences Bill fast approaching the station closed on the 3rd August 1967. The now late Tony Windsor or TW as he was known introduces the last programme announcing all the DJs on board. He chats to Martin Kane, John Aston, David Mackay, Mark Sloane, Tony Munson, Alan Black, and has a chat to Captain Lukehurst and engineers Ted Walters and Bob Gittis. Included in this last transmission from the station is a snippet from Radio Pinafore with Jimmy Gravel and Cathy Mc Gowan. Do remember the Silexcine Emulsion commercial well its on this CD. As time ticks away Tony Windsor makes a brilliant speech ( this guy was a broadcasting legend) sadly no more. Then finally the Managing Director Mr Ted Albury  formerly from Radio 390 makes a final fascinating speech followed by the National Anthem and then the station closed for ever. This is a good quality CD considering the recording is over 40 years old and one for the avid collector.  Footnote;  The vessel was towed to Miami, USA were she was de rigged and broadcasting equipment removed. In 1970 the ship was renamed Akuarius II and in 1974 the ship was re-registered and became the Earl J Conrad Junior and operated as a cargo vessel. It was last heard of working as a fishing vessel in the Gulf of Mexico for Haynie Products of Reedsville, Ohio, USA in 1987.
