FINAL HOUR OF RNI 31 AUG 1974

Radio Northsea International's final hour was broadcast on 31st August 1974 owing to the Dutch Governments decision to pass their version of the Marine Offences Bill banning offshore stations from the Dutch coast. RNI as it was called was probably the most lavish vessel of all the pirates put together with massive studios, showers, proper bedrooms, and lots of space for everybody. An amazing amount of money was spent on the ship the Mebo 2, the name derived from its financial backers Mr MEister and Mr BOlier. The station itself was a welcome new player in the offshore broadcasting world and started test transmissions in January 1970 and was a surprise to all offshore radio fans after the closure of all the other pirates in 1967. Listen to the late Daffy Don Allen with Brian Mc Kenzie when they chat about their previous time before joining the station and their time on board the Mebo 2. Daffy Don was from Manx Radio and Radio Caroline North. Hear them play a naughty record "Big Fanny" and listen to some of the RNI jingles that we all remember. Brian McKenzie then goes on to list  ALL the DJs that were on the station an incredible 51 in total, its not until he reads them all out that you realise how many you actually remember!!!  They then give a brief history of the station from its conception to its last day.  They both say their fond farewells, the stations theme tune Man of Action by The Les Reed Orchestra is played for the last time and the English service of RNI was no more. Listen to the countdown when the Dutch service takes over. A Brilliant CD charting another end to a super station that was very sadly missed by thousands of offshore radio fans everywhere. Pure solid gold nostalgia and one for the collector.  Footnote;   Vessel eventually towed to De Groot Van Shipyard overhauled and sold to the Libyan Government for political broadcasting. Renamed El Fatah during 1984 and used by the Libyan Navy for....................wait for it ........target practice  yes ..target practice !!!!!!!!!!!!   The Mebo 2 was sunk in the Gulf of Sidra in the Med.
